Stone Axe II vinyl out now! Pics available

Posted in 2010, Artist, News on August 6th, 2010 by Gira1971

Stone Axe IIThe European version of Stone Axe – II is now available on Alone Records/Burning World Records! It’s alimited edition of 300 with 100 on gold vinyl, 200 on black. So get them while you can. Read an excerpt of the review Woody did for The Ripple Effect. See the pics and tracklist (different than on cd) after the break (click on pictues for bigger versions).

When it comes to mid-tempo heavy rock, Stone Axe are the most dedicated muthas on the planet right now. Too old and unfashionable to be considered “retro,” Stone Axe eat, shit and breathe the full gamut of classic rock from the late 1960’s through the early 1970’s.  Stone Axe II picks up where 2009’s full length debut left off but also offers quite a few surprises. The first album was heavy on British style blues rock of bands like Free, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green era, only), etc. This new one touches on just about every style of classic rock. Listening to Stone Axe II from start to finish is like listening to a good rock radio station with a good DJ and no format restrictions.

Stone Axe interview on Stonerrock.com & Tour dates

Stone Axe live

Stone Axe live

Tony Reed recently did an interview on Stonerrock.com’s John Pegorano about the history of Stone Axe and their future plans. Please read the whole interview at the link below.

So a mess of years back, my wife went out to Seattle to visit friends (fellow SR.commers, no less). When she came back, she brought a CD by a band she caught live – Mos Generator. One listen and I was sold. The Musical Gods looked kindly upon me, as shortly thereafter I received their end-of-the-world opus, The Late Great Planet Earth. One listen to that and I was a fan for life. When I heard guitarist/singer Tony Dallas Reed was starting another project, Stone Axe, I was sure I was going to dig it too. What I didn`t realize was how much. The band – essentially a studio collaboration between Reed and singer Dru Brinkerhoff (fleshed out with Mykey Haslip and Mike Dupont live) – is a wild romp through classic rock. Tony and I had this email exchange about Stone Axe, long-lost b-sides, and the fate of Mos Generator.

Stone Axe in Classic Rock magazine

Posted in 2009, Artist, Label on August 3rd, 2009 by burningworldrecs
Classic Rock cover

Classic Rock cover

Stone Axe is going places. If you happen to buy the new Classic Rock issue (august 2009 with Jimi Hendrix on the cover) you’ll reed and hear all about Tony and Dru and their 70s infused heavy blues. Stone Axe song ‘There’d be Days’ is included on the cover cd as the second song and inside there’s two recommendation as to why YOU should listen to Stone Axe:
From the fertile mind and nimble fingers of ex-Mos Generator Tony Reed and punk howler Dru Brinkerhoff, Wahington based groove merchants Stone Axe play tribute to classic 70s hard rock bands from Thin Lizzy to Leaf Hound. Well-trod ground but done with soul and sophistication.
Next to this the song is included on the Classic Rock Heavy Rotations inside the magazine.
We could have chosen almost any song off this month’s free cd – but this note perfect Faces stomp-along is the one we ‘re most smitten with right now.

And a short but nice review to follow that: Port Orchard, Washington’s Stone Axe conjure a guttural, soulful hard-rock cauldron that suggests they’ve absorbed their share of Humble Pie and Thin Lizzy. Singer Dru Brinkerhoff valiantly rasps in ways that make Steve Marriott and Rod Stewart comparisons seem not at all absurd. DAVE SEGAL

Stone Axe is touring the east coast of the USA starting august 8 and ending oktober 17th 2009, check out the dates and places here.

The Ripple Effect: rave review of Stone Axe

Druw Brinkerhoof Stone Axe

Dru Brinkerhoff Stone Axe

Sometimes it doesn’t take much to hook you, to grab you, to reel you in like some thrashing marlin off the coast of Baja. And I’ll tell you, it only took 1 (count it, one) second of the first track of Stone Axe’s debut album to know that I was hooked. If I was a marlin you could just go ahead and drag me into the good Stone Axe fishing boat, gut me, hang me up by my heels and weigh me. Oh heck, stuff me and stick me on the wall of the Stone Axe pub because I ain’t going anywhere.

Stone Axe is the creation of Mos Generator guitarist Tony Reed and The Swinos vocalist Dru Brinkerhoff and should be adorning the shelves of all fans of big time, blues-injected classic rock like Free, Bad Company, and early Moody/Marsden Whitesnake. I saw this album referred to as “stoner rock,” on some random music zine, but I gotta disagree. That’s really just lazy publishing. Not all retro-70′s, big riff rock and roll is “stoner,” just like those bands I mentioned aren’t stoner. No, this is big time, ball bashing, groove-laden, riff mongering blues and roll, directly related to those bands from the past, but streamlined right here into our future.

“I’m pretty sure 2009 will be a good year for STONE AXE from Port Orchard, Washington. In February 2009 the band’s first album has been released thru Roadburn Records, after a debut 7″ in 2008, and if you dig the heavy blues rock from the early 70′s as much as I do than please take note here. If you have some knowledge of rock music history in the 60′s and 70′s then it should be no problem to detect the band’s influences. There’s also a bit of rock ‘n’ roll, folk and psychedelic in their music, even so they don’t want to imitate the old sound at any price. Guitarist Tony Reed’s capable to transfer all the good riffs and more from that period into this decade and then he sculpts some top-notch songs out of this refreshing process.”

Stone Axe | Interview | Lords Of Metal

“Dru and I met about ten years ago. I produced and recorded many demos for his bands The Swinos & Gift For Fiction. During these sessions I could tell that Dru was an exceptional vocalist and I knew I would work with him some day other that studio work or drumming (I ended up playing drums on recordings in both of his bands). During recording and rehearsals we would talk about our favourite bands which included all the great 60’s and 70’s bands and some obscure ones as well. In 2006 I started working on an EP for Mos Generator that had a more classic sound and feel. Some of the ideas on the riff tapes for that album ended up being the musical genesis for Stone Axe.”
