Julian Cope, Archdude of Essex, connaiseur of all things psychedelic and underground, over at Head Heritage expresses his sincere love for Sick on My Journey, the debut album of the trio Haikai No Ku.
“Next up, take a listen to the sonic devastation of SICK ON MY JOURNEY by power trio Haikai no Ku, whose wall-of-noise and Titanic celebrations of Midrange are a joy to behold. Despite their fake Japanese name and scrupulous attention to overdubbing, this bunch is entirely itself, bearing all the Matamps-Thrown-Down-Elevator-Liftshafts sonic attack of Les Rallizes Dénudés, but without the supremely IQ-lessness of Mizutani’s cohorts – truly the Billy Talbots of the Underground. Indeed, although the Dutch record company Burning World claim that this band plays ‘Death Toll Blues’ in the vein of Mizutani’s finest and Kawabata’s Mainliner, please be aware that this is something of a red herring. For musically at least Haikai no Ku exhibit none of the pre-teen pedestrian Lümpenhippy Velvetsisms that Mizutani requires in order to clear his psychic custard (hell, this drummer sounds like he’s got a whole kit!), nor even any of the post-Blue Cheer, sub-High Rise wipe-outs of Kawabata Makoto’s transcendental Mainliner. But fear not, my kiddies, for instead, Haikai no Ku present us with their very own brand new trip AND it’s just as stupid and petulantly ramalaming as any of the aforemenched. So grab this slice of brown vinyl with its free CD and dig dig dig it! Stuperb debut LP, gentlemen!”

Haikai No Ku – the brainchild of Bong guitarist Mike Vest, Sam Booth and Jerome Smith – will release it’s first album on Burning World Records this august. The release will be available on cd, vinyl and digital.
The band has been described as: “Death Toll Blues” . Ear damaging psych heavily influenced by Japanese bands like Mainliner, Les Rallizes Denudes etc. Crashing drums and Bass lay down the framework for fiery guitar attacks to lash across peoples faces. Expect dirge, noise and astral planes.
New Newcastle supergroup featuring Mike Vest (Drunk In Hell, Bong, Master Slave,Ramesses, Basillica, Obey, etc), Jerome Smith (Female Borstal) and Sam Booth (Fooot Hair, Obey). Phew! Haikai No Ku play some of the most morose, damaged blues psych we’ve heard in years: death-toll bass and crashing drums lead the way for a solitary guitar line obliterated by total psychedelic guitar scree. Songs start off as loose jams that slowly build up to utter brain-melting acid psychedelia. Early Ramleh gone deathrock?

Why not start the new year in the spirit of sharing, we at the Burning World Headquarters thought. So from now on all ‘Live At Roadburn’ albums that we have the digital rights to will be free. Digitally that is. CD’s and vinyl still have to be bought 😉
So this is your chance to listen back to gigs by: Wolves In The Throne Room, Yob, White Hills, Bong, Wino among other. Put them on your iPod, burn em on a disc for your car, delete them if you don’t like them. It’s all fine with us.
The more people listen to the music we put out, the more we like it. So get over to the Burning World Bandcamp page and download or listen away.
There is only minor one catch: if you pay nothing (which is fine by us) you’ll have to leave your mailaddress. We promise we will only mail you one with a big unsubscribe button in there so no harm done. Or maybe you’ll like to keep updated once a month on what’s going on at Roadburn Records and Burning World Records.
Check out Wino’s Live At Roadburn below for instance. It’s smokin’!
Our good friends at Aquarius Records in San Franciso are one of the few shops around who review each and every one of the records that come in. These guys really care about their shop, the goods they sell and their customers. That’s why we are really thrilled to read the rave review of our Bong – Live at Roadburn CD. If you haven’t got it yet please pick it up in our Discogs store.
‘At times, “Onwards…” drifts back down into lulling stretches of spacey warbling electronic FX, and hippy-kraut hand drumming, coming across like a sinister Siloah or doomy Amon Duul. Or imagine the Master Musicians Of Bukkake making an ambient album for Miasmah, maybe. The equally epic second track, “Wizards Of Krull” previously recorded for the first side of their self-titled lp debut in 2009, continues in this vein, with more powerful percussion, though. It’s 24 minutes of ritualistically pounding drums and crashing cymbals, low drone from bass and voice both, gobs of distortion and spooky psychedelic effects, those Shahi Baaja note clusters chiming in with regularity. “Wizards…” gets slowly more and more intense as it goes, really ramping up towards the end with rhythmic urgency. Damn this is good! Bong bring it, all right, quite recommended, definitely for fans of Om, SUNNO, Grails, Sylvester Anfang… and of course Bong. And bongs! Most if not all Bong releases thus far have been live, and this one is much less of a lo-fi recording than some of those, making for an essential document of Bong’s unique trance-inducing potency.’
