The name STONE AXE makes you instantly think of a caveman, Neanderthal, smashing your skull into little pieces! That’s why you’re in for quite a surprise. This band is specialized in one of the most authentic 60′s/70′s psych/stoner variations heard in this decade, in all its emotional, massive and primitive glory. One can’t but appreciate the rowdy and relaxed manner in which “Taking Me Home”, for example, chugs along, like BUDGIE and SAXON members on a leave from prison and rocking out the summer. In particular, vocalist Dru Brinkerhoff has an impressive tone for the loud blues/soul type of singing and one doesn’t need to tolerate one moment of standard stoner rock shouting here. The guitarist worships HENDRIX and the drums break out into excellent Bonham fills now and then.
All in all, this bluesy desert rock would be perfect for listening for example on a road trip, but is a bit jam-heavy for simply sitting at home and listening to it without moonshine, darkness and a rock club. About a half of the songs rock your socks off anyway, such as “Diamonds & Fools”, reminiscent of THIN LIZZY. While there’s nothing progressive or forward looking within ten miles of this, nor is it quite the second coming of CREAM or BLACK SABBATH, this swampy hard rock is perfect for your vinyl rack in either the heavier end of 70′s rock or the lighter end of stoner metal (Bio thanks to Rock of Ages).
