Doom lords Conan signs to Burning World Records for new studio album

Caveman Battle Doom Lords CONAN and European purveyors of fine riffs BURNING WORLD RECORDS-mothership of Roadburn Records and home of musical heavyweights Gnaw Their Tongues, Lustmord and A Storm of Light- have joined forces for the release of CONAN’S first full length album.

This leaden slab of doom is due to be recorded towards the end of the year at the renowned Foel Studio, with producer Chris Fielding. The album is pencilled is scheduled for early 2012. The release will follow on from the success of 2010’s devastating Horseback Battle Hammer (Throne Records / Aurora Borealis Records) and the current release, a grim black hole of tone in the form of a split with Northern Ireland’s Slomatics (Head of Crom Records).  CONAN slay all with a compelling mix of devastating drones and warhorse-gallop crust to drive home their brutal intention and wrestle victory from the jaws of chaos.

Europe’s heaviest battle-sloths may have found their finest ally in Burning World Records…

Winterfylleth – The Mercian Shere out now on vinyl. Pics available

Winterfylleth - The Mercian Sphere“Music lives and dies by its ability to affect the listener, yet few metal bands are capable of making a record that moistens the eyes and puts a lump in the throat of even the most sentimental listener, let alone the most hardened of metal fans. But when not only does this, but does it through the medium of savage, bleak black metal while still evoking all the emotions metal’s most evil style is known for, this becomes a staggering achievement. Winterfylleth have done just this.” (Tom Dare,

If you like the warm textured black metal sounds of Wolves in the Throne Room, Altar of Plagues or Fen, this Terrorizer magazine favourite is your new favourite band. Winterfylleth destroyed the Roadburn festival in April and is making lots of friend in Europe at the moment.

Burning World Records is proud to present The Mercian Sphere on vinyl, a double gatefold. Get your copy (on black or gold vinyl) in the Burning World Records Discogs Store.

A Storm of Light review at aQuarius Records

As The Valley Of Death Becomes Us, Our Silver Memories Fade‘Latest slab of epic, apocalyptic, psychedelic doom from A Storm Of Light, the project of Josh Graham, who also plays in Red Sparowes, Blood And Time, and of course the psychedelic doom sludge granddaddies of them all Neurosis. So it makes sense that Graham’s project explores similar sonic territory, but where Neurosis is all downtuned crush and bellowed howl, ASOL is more spaced out, more Hawkwind, more melodic, more atmospheric. Even more so than the last full length, As The Valley spends much of its time drifting, and smoldering, hovering and shimmering, but when the songs do lock in, and get heavy, it’s still on the melodic psychedelic side of heavy, the vocals the driving force, way up in the mix, wreathed in echo and delay, giving the sound a bit of a Kyuss vibe, which is definitely not a bad thing, but when the band do crush, the sound MASSIVE, the guitars impossibly heavy, the production epic, but those stretches of extreme heaviness surprisingly brief with the tracks more often than not slipping back into the broodier moodier minimalism that much of the record explores, and those pronounced vocals, and the vocal heavy mix, definitely give this As The Valley a distinctly pop vibe, which probably screams sell out to some, but to us, just makes this less a doom metal record, or a post doom record, or whatever you want to call it, and transforms it into something tougher to pigeonhole, a sort of pop flecked metallic psych, or psychedelic doom pop. But let’s to put too much of an emphasis on the pop element, cuz this stuff is still pretty goddamn heavy, it just happens to have hooks and melodies, and chooses not to bury them, and instead flaunts them, and often lets the melody, instead of the riff, drive the song. Which is actually pretty refreshing…’

A Storm of Light ‘As the Valley of Death Becomes Us’ Full Album Stream (Noisecreep) and vinyl available

a-storm-of-lightFrom A Storm of Light’s ‘As the Valley of Death Becomes Us, Our Silver Memories Fade’ hits shelves on May 17th, but Noisecreep is thrilled to stream the whole shebang for our readers today. A Storm of Light admit that they made a less “suffocatingly intense record” this time out, but without sacrificing what fans have come to love about them. It’s heavy, arty, and discordant in a Mastodon-ian way, with elements reminiscent of early Soundgarden and Neurosis.

“This time we chose to write a variety of concise and focused songs that all fit together into one album, but didn’t all have the same emotion,” said guitarist Josh Graham, who has previously worked with Neurosis and was in Red Sparrowes. “Before this release, we were more concerned with creating an overall mood or feeling. While I think we made two suffocatingly intense records, this one has made us a better band. For us, the record has a great flow and sort of tells it’s own story as the songs flow. It also makes playing live a lot more fun for us, as the intensity shifts more than ever before.”

Gnaw Their Tongues L’Arrivee De La Terne Mort Triomphante review at aQuarius

gnaw-their-tongues-larrivee-de-la-terne-mort-triomphanteOur good friends at aQuarius Records in San Francisco have received a nice packet of Bunring World and Roadburn Records releases. Earlier this week we published the Bong review, now it’s time for their review of Gnaw Their Tongues L’Arrivee De La Terne Mort Triomphante LP.  If you are as impressed with the description as we are, please your copy in our discogs store or if you are in the US at aQuarius of course!

‘The sound here too seems a bit more lush, more produced, cleaner, but without losing any of the filth. We might go so far as to say this is the most accessible GTT release to date, but then it’s all relative, this is still some seriously crusty, devastatingly brutal, menacing and mean black doom misery, but deftly woven into something more melodic, more emotionally charged, where past GTT records were simply hateful and hellish, pummeling and punishing, L’Arrivee De La Terne Mort Triomphante is something more, an epic, intense journey, the soundtrack element can’t be understated, this totally plays out like the score to some insane, and insanely harrowing epic, a tale of death, and lost souls, and the end of humanity, and total annihilation, but as with all great epics, there continues to be hope, a glowing ember, that sits at the middle of it all, waiting to be discovered, and to perhaps eventually triumph, or perhaps to perish and disappear into utter and unending blackness. Quite possibly the most epic black doom cinematic symphonic noise metal opera EVER.’
